Facebook Growler

This is a Growl application to get Facebook status updates from your news feed.
This app may not be working for anyone right now as Facebook has recently changed their login procedures. It may be a while before a fix is out. (posted 7 June 2013)

Important upgrade information: If you are upgrading from an earlier version, you will probably have to log out from the facebook applications page before everything will work correctly. Just go here: https://www.facebook.com/settings/?tab=applications, remove the NewsFeedGrowler application, and then start up the Facebook Growler app. You may have to start the app twice after logging in the first time to get it to fully recognize the authentication.

Installation instructions: Install the software. Run the software. You should be presented with a facebook login form, so go ahead and log in. Next you should see a form requesting permission for the NewsFeedGrowler application. Sorry for the multiple personalities, but Facebook won’t allow applications with “Facebook” or “fb” in the title. See the included Readme file for details on the permissions, but the bottom line is this application will not post anything to your wall or make any other status updates. It is “read-only”.

If you want to “sign out” after you have run the program, go to http://www.facebook.com/settings/?tab=applications and remove “NewsFeedGrowler”. While you are there, you might want to scan through the other programs that have access to different parts of your facebook account and delete any that you don’t use any more.

Bugs with ver 2.0.0: None so far!

F.A.Q.:

1. Why are there things in my feed that are not being growled? Why do I sometimes see things growled but they aren’t in my newsfeed? It is strange, but the API’s for Facebook are not perfect. Things like that happen. I wish it was not the case, but many people report the same thing with other Facebook desktop apps.

So that’s it. Let me know what you think.

Changelog

ver 2.0.0 (22 January 2012) Revamped almost all code, improved logging, progress circle, .NET user settings (no more messy XML file), UI changes, put data retrieval on separate threads. This version was tested pretty extensively before release (thanks Aidan and Keith).

ver 1.3.1 (29 December 2011) Fixed bugs where the authentication page was displayed multiple times, and an error that would crash the program if there were missing keys in the configuration file. There is now a manual login/logout button on the form. Also added smarter logic to save form settings more automatically. (downloaded 538 times)

ver 1.3 (27 December 2011) Skipped ver 1.2. Added many options such as Messages & Chats, wall posts, Friend Requests, Notifications, and Pokes, Also streamlined the startup authentication procedure. This should be a pretty stable release. This version was removed after less than two days due to excessive nasty bugs. Downloaded 31 times.

ver 1.1 (29 June 2011) Added many options to select which Facebook events will be notified.  Also added option to check server for application updates. Downloaded 1684 times.

ver 0.1.0 Fixed a lot of bugs.  The program should be working for everyone now. Next version should include a lot of features and configuration options. Added an option to enable logging.  See the documentation and the xml configuration file for details.

Privacy Policy

My privacy policy is simple. I don’t care about your personal life. I will not collect anything about you, to include posts made on facebook, friends, email address, activities, etc. However, if you do send me a application troubleshooting log, it will probably contain that information. I will try to remind you when I ask for a log to review it for anything personal that you don’t want me to see. Other than that, I will not know anything about your use of this app. The only information sent from your app to my server is the version of the app that you are using. I use this to determine if you are using the latest version. If you are not using the latest version, you will get a notification that an update is available. The app update checking can also be turned off in the user settings, if you wish.

  1. If you are having problems with this app as of today, 9 AUG 2011, there is a problem on Facebook servers. I do not have an estimate on when it will be fixed.

  2. hi, i’m trying to install the latest facebook growler and when i run it or the first time, it tries to launch the FB authorization but i get this error:

Default values have been loaded due to a syntax error in the Xml Configuration file: C:\Documents and Settings\jdoctors\Application Data\FacebookGrowler\FacebookGrowler.xml
    The error returned was:
Could not find file ‘C:\Documents and Settings\jdoctors\Application Data\FacebookGrowler\FacebookGrowler.xml

Then if i hit OK, the browser window opens and says “The website cannot display the page” with this error code:
This error (HTTP 500 Internal Server Error) means that the website you are visiting had a server problem which prevented the webpage from displaying.

I’m running XP on a 32 bit machine.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

  3. oops ignore me, just saw your post… sorry.

  4. Yes, those http 500 errors are specifically related to the server problems at facebook. Once FB gets the servers running again, the problem will go away. Sorry for the trouble.

  5. As of 0800 EST, the FacebookGrowler app should be working again. The problem has been resolved on Facebook’s end. Sorry for the troubles. By the way, be on the lookout for a new version of the Facebook Growler app by the end of the week. :)

  6. What about translations?

  7. Hmm… I am a beginning programmer and I have never tackled anything like translating an app before. Let me look into it.

  8. The post mentions that version 1.2 was supposed to be posted in August, but the download links are still pointing to 1.1.0. Has the official 1.2.0 release been delayed?

  9. Has 1.2.0 been released? I’ve got 1.1.0 and the message/chat errors are very frustrating, I’m really keen for a new release. Thanks!

  10. @Keith & @Jono, it looks like I have been delinquent on this. I am going to try and get it completed and published by Christmas. Sorry about the delays :(

  11. No worries – thanks, Skip! Looking forward to it.

  12. Take your time :) thank you!

  13. I am probably one or two days behind. I have made a lot of changes, and added many other notification options. I want to test it out for a day or two to make sure everything is working. I am shooting for Monday or Tuesday after Christmas. Hang in there!

  14. As promised, ver 1.3 of the Facebook Growler was released today. Please report any bugs here. (crossing fingers). If upgrading from an earlier version, you may have to manually log out from the facebook applications page and then re-log in. https://www.facebook.com/settings/?tab=applications

  15. Tried installing 1.3, but it just crashes immediately upon startup. I’m using Win 7 x64. (Previously, I used it on Win XP 32-bit).

  16. Hmm.. I’m also on Win 7 x64, so I don’t think that’s it. Does it give you any feedback at all? An error message or anything? Do you see the form? Can you try removing the NewsFeedGrowler app from your Facebook apps and try to restart the FacebookGrowler?

  17. @Keith, one thing I just thought of, try replacing your xml configuration file with the one I posted above. I think I may have forgotten that there were a couple of changes that needed to be made with the configuration file.

  18. Hi Skip,

Windows just throws up an error saying “FacebookGrowler has stopped working – A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.” It never even gets to the point where it creates the directory and XML file. So I tried again with 1.3.1, manually installed it and this time manually copied the sample XML file to %APPDATA%. I’m still getting the same error. LMK if you want to troubleshoot offline — happy to work with you on it.

    Keith

  19. @Keith, thanks for the offer. Please contact me through the contact form on this website.
    http://skipstechtalk.net/contact-skip/
If I don’t reply to you within a few hours, post here again so I know that I have missed your email.

In the meantime, it sounds like you are installing from zip?? In that case, make sure you are putting the configuration file in %APPDATA%\FacebookGrowler. I put a new, clean, configuration file in the zip file this morning, so download it again and try again. Although, the program is supposed to be smart enough to know when the configuration file and/or directory are missing and create them for you. It does look like I have more troubleshooting to do.

  20. For anyone following these comments, version 1.3.1 was posted last night. It should have fixed any errors with startup crashes. If you are having a problem with that, please post any data that you think might be helpful to my troubleshooting. I want to get this fixed as quickly as possible.

  21. Skip, figured out the problem — the .zip file I downloaded still contained the 1.3.0 version of the executable. I did it probably within an hour or so of your posting 1.3.1, so there must have been a server caching issue. I used the .msi file this time, and now it works fine. I also re-downloaded the .zip file again to be sure, and it has the correct executable now. Thanks!

  22. @Keith, that’s good to know. Thanks!

By the way, I am working on the next version. It will be a few weeks before it is ready.

  23. I’m having issues REstarting Facebook Growler with 1.3.1. If there’s no XML file, it creates one, and runs fine. But if I reboot my machine, or just exit and restart the program, it crashes as soon as brings up the dialog window. This happens even with the default XML file, no options changed. Anybody else experiencing this?

  24. Is there an error message? I have not had that problem, so I will need more details. Thanks for reporting it though!

  25. No error, just the default Windows message of “FacebookGrowler has stopped working”, along with the dialog to close the program. If I delete my XML file, then it recreates it and runs fine. So I did that, and changed to just the default options — now I can tell that the error happens after “Connected to Facebook as [me]“. I enabled logging and can send you a log file if you want.

  26. Please do send me the log file. skip@pelorus.org. Thanks.

  27. @keith, also, when you send it, please try to be as complete as possible with describing the actual workflow that can recreate the problem. Also, if you found a workaround, please try to explain that too.

For instance, it is not clear. Is the program working for you now or not? Does it crash every time? It doesn’t sound like it is related to the xml settings file. Or is it?

When describing the step, state the initial conditions (program is running/not running, settings file in place/not in place, etc)

  28. Skip, sent you an email with details and an obfuscated log file. HTH -Keith

  29. I’m having the same problem as Keith. When I restart my laptop FacebookGrowler should open automatically, but instead I get the Windows “FacebookGrowler has stopped working” dialog.

I can’t get it to open. It worked the first time I used it and now always crashes. Opening it from the Start Menu gets the same error.

    I’ve attached a screenshot: http://ScrnSht.com/wuffvu

  30. @Aidan,
Would you be willing to help me test a new version that I am currently working on. I am working with Keith, but it would be helpful to have at least one more tester. Email me at skip@pelorus.org if you can help.

  31. I’ve emailed you directly. Cheers

  32. Got it, and replied. Thanks.

  33. Uploaded ver 2.0.0 today. Give it a try!

  34. i’m very dissapointed because i can’t uninstall this program.
my computer says that i need facebookgrowl1.3.1.msi to uninstall it, but ofcourse i deleted it after finishing my installation. dosent anyone have a link for older version(especially1.3.1)?

  35. Yes, I keep all older versions. In general, you should not ever delete installation files for any program, just for the reason that you indicated. Zip file installations can be deleted. Here’s the link to 1.3.1:
    http://skipstechtalk.net/files/FacebookGrowler_1.3.1.msi
Let me know if you need anything else :)

    Skip

  36. Actually, that shouldn’t be necessary. When you install from an .msi file, Windows should keep a copy of it in C:\Windows\Installer . Sounds like that copy got corrupted, or the directory got purged. But I do agree it’s always wise to keep around a copy of what you installed. Sometimes programs do require reinstallation, and few give you that option in Control Panel.

  37. thank you, successed to uninstall the program.

  38. I’m getting the following errors when I attempt to login after authenticating with Facebook:

just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

  39. OK, thanks for the bug report. Have you found a work around? Perhaps you could go into your facebook app settings and remove the newfeed growler app and try again.
    https://www.facebook.com/settings?tab=applications

But I will look into it and get back to you within a day or two hopefully.

  40. Actually, it appears to have started working. I just had some notifications pop up from Facebook. So I’m not sure what the problem was. Maybe it was a problem on Facebook’s end? I’ll let you know if I get any more errors.

  41. No problem. I still don’t want to application to crash at any time, so I am still going to try and recreate the problem and find a correction. Anyway, I am glad it is working for you now.

  42. I get this error when I try to click the log in button, it did not bring up a log in form when i first ran the program.

jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
    enabled.

    For example:

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

  43. well, that definitely should not happen. Have you used this program before? Was it an earlier version? Have you just upgraded and this is the first time you are running this version but you ran an older version before?

Right now the only thing I can think of trying is to remove the app from you list of approved facebook apps and then try running it again. https://www.facebook.com/settings?tab=applications

Please let me know if you get around this. In the meantime, I will look for a solution.

  44. Just wanted to say great work here Skip. Really enjoying it. Superb job. =)

  45. Few issues, in facebook growler options panel I turn off alerts for chat/messages I still receive them, have to turn them off in growl settings.

I receive pop ups of my own shared posts etc.

  46. Thank you for this program which happens to be the only growl app which supports Facebook.
Unfortunately it does not work very well in my system.
It does not send at all notifications for the newly received messages/chats in my FB account.
But it does notify me with no problems about the new messages in my wall and the newsfeed.

I reinstalled the app but the problem remains. I get no notifications for chat/messages.

Do you have any suggestion as to what might cause this behavior and how to fix it?

  47. @killik Sorry, I know it is frustrating, and I wish it worked better too. I have made several changes trying to keep chats and other notifications coming in accurately, but the API I am using just doesn’t seem to be consistent with regards to chats & messages. It works great for wall posts and timeline posts, but the messages and chats… not so much. I haven’t tried anything lately, so maybe I will get time to look at it again sometime soon. But in the meantime, I am afraid that I will not be able to help you.

  48. I’m trying to log in but every time I click the Login button I get a blank window (http://i.imgur.com/AQSenOh.png) and I can’t log in. Any advice? o:

  49. Hi Skip, nice app. I do have one issue… I keep having to login over and over again. Sessions seem to be good for about 1 hour at a time.

  50. I think something has changed at Facebook recently because this is affecting everyone. Sorry, but it may take me a while to get it fixed.
